Your first credit card can help you pay for everyday purchases, but it is still borrowed money. Before applying, understand how the bill works and what happens if you carry a balance.
Begin with the card’s basic costs
Check whether there is a joining fee, annual fee, renewal fee or a condition to waive the annual fee. Read the interest rate and charges for late payment, cash advances and other transactions. Paying the full statement balance by the due date is different from paying only the minimum amount. If you carry a balance, interest and charges can add up.
Choose features that match your routine
Think about where you spend: groceries, online purchases, travel, fuel or a few large planned expenses. Then check whether those transactions qualify for rewards, whether there are monthly caps or exclusions, and how points can be redeemed. A reward has value only if you can use it on terms that suit you.
Use our Credit Card Reward Calculator with the earn rate and point value from a card’s current terms. It does not assume that all spending qualifies.
Understand billing and security
Know the statement date, payment due date and how to view transactions. Set a reminder or an automatic payment if appropriate, and check that it works. Never share your PIN, password, CVV or OTP. Contact the issuer through a verified channel if a card is lost or a transaction looks unfamiliar.
Compare before applying
- Annual and joining fees, including waiver conditions.
- Interest and charges if you do not pay the full balance.
- Reward categories, caps, exclusions and redemption options.
- Foreign currency, cash withdrawal and late-payment charges if relevant.
- Whether the card fits your budget and payment habits.
Is a credit card the right fit?
If you expect to rely on borrowing for routine expenses or may not be able to pay the statement, pause and compare other choices. A card’s advertised perks do not remove its repayment obligations. No card is right for everyone, and this guide does not guarantee an application outcome.
