A personal loan and a credit-card EMI can both spread a purchase or expense across instalments, but their terms are different. Which costs less depends on the written offer, your repayment timeline and the fees. Do not compare only the headline monthly instalment.
Make an apples-to-apples comparison
Use the same borrowing amount and repayment period where both offers allow it. Record the amount actually credited or used, interest rate, APR, processing or conversion fee, taxes, EMI, total repayment and any optional add-on. Include the effect of the conversion date and statement cycle for a card EMI. Ask whether the purchase continues to earn rewards, whether fees are charged separately, and whether cancelling or closing early has a cost.
Check the repayment mechanics
For a personal loan, review the KFS, rate type, payment date, late charges, part-payment or foreclosure conditions and disbursal amount. For a card EMI, check the issuer's current conversion terms, the tenure, how the EMI appears on the statement and what happens if a payment is missed. A card's advertised rate may exclude fees or apply only to eligible transactions; an approved offer can also vary by cardholder.
Test a realistic budget
Choose the payment you can make even in a month with an unexpected expense. If the EMI leaves no room for the rest of your budget, consider borrowing less, delaying the expense or comparing another option. Do not take a loan solely because an app displays a pre-selected offer.
