Preparing documents before starting a personal-loan application can help you answer questions accurately and avoid last-minute searching. There is no single checklist that fits every applicant: requirements vary by lender, employment type, loan amount and application channel. Use this as a starting point, then follow the current list on the lender's official website or application.
Identity and address details
A lender may ask for an accepted identity document, PAN details and proof of current address. Make sure the name and date of birth are consistent across records. If you recently moved or changed your name, ask what supporting document is acceptable before uploading anything.
Income and work information
Salaried applicants are commonly asked for recent salary slips, bank statements showing salary credits and employer details. Self-employed applicants may be asked for bank statements, income-tax returns, financial statements, business registration or GST-related records. These are examples, not a universal list; some lenders use secure digital verification instead of asking for every document.
Existing repayment commitments
List current EMIs, credit-card balances and other monthly obligations. A lender may ask about them while assessing an application. Knowing the amounts also helps you decide whether another payment fits your budget. Estimate possible payments with the Personal Loan EMI Calculator and compare the full repayment with fees before applying.
Make a clean application
- Use consistent spelling and contact details throughout the form.
- Upload clear, complete, unaltered documents through the lender's verified website or app.
- Check the requested amount, tenure and stated use before submitting.
- Keep a copy of the application reference and the documents you shared.
- Ask the lender if a document is unreadable or a field is unclear; do not guess.
Protect your documents and account
Do not send identity documents to an unverified WhatsApp number or someone promising guaranteed approval. Check the domain and app publisher independently. Never disclose OTPs, UPI PINs, card PINs, CVV or net-banking passwords to a caller or agent. A document check does not require you to tell another person your OTP or PIN.
Before you press Apply
Review the lender's interest rate, APR or total-cost disclosure where applicable, processing fees, repayment schedule, late charges, rate type and prepayment conditions. Approval and final terms depend on the lender's assessment; preparing documents does not guarantee eligibility. Compare possible options on FinSmarter's personal-loan page and read each lender's current terms.
FinSmarter helps you understand the numbers and organise a comparison; we do not promise approval. If you want help planning an EMI, request a callback. Do not include OTPs, PINs or passwords in the form.
