Credit Card Cash Advance: Fees, Interest and Safer Checks
A FinSmarter visual guide · Credit Cards

A credit-card cash advance is a cash withdrawal using the card's cash-withdrawal facility. It is different from a normal purchase. The cash limit may be lower than the purchase limit, and the issuer may charge a withdrawal fee and finance charges under the card's terms.

Check the exact cost before withdrawing

Read the card's Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) and current schedule of charges. Find the cash-advance fee, minimum fee, interest rate, when finance charges begin, the cash withdrawal limit and any ATM operator charge. Do not assume the purchase interest-free period applies to cash. RBI's credit-card directions require issuers to disclose cash-advance fees and finance charges; each card's actual rate and fee can differ.

Why the balance can be costly

Cash advances may start accruing finance charges from the transaction date under issuer terms, and the withdrawal fee can be added to the amount owed. If the statement is not cleared, the outstanding can also affect the interest-free period for purchases. The actual calculation depends on the card agreement and payments credited, so use the issuer's illustration or ask for a written estimate.

Compare the alternatives

If the need is urgent, compare the cash advance with other available ways to pay, using the amount you need and the time you expect to take to repay. Consider the total fees and interest, not only the speed of access. Do not use a cash advance from one card to make the minimum payment on another without calculating both costs; that can move the balance without solving it.

Before you use the facility

  • Check the current MITC and cash withdrawal limit.
  • Ask the issuer to estimate charges for your amount and expected repayment date.
  • Protect the physical card and ATM PIN, and cover the keypad.
  • Keep the receipt and verify the transaction in the issuer app.
  • Contact the issuer promptly through official channels if the transaction is unfamiliar.
