If you are new to borrowing, you may have a limited credit history. That does not mean you need to take on debt just to create a score. Credit is useful only when the product fits your needs and you can repay it comfortably.

Start with affordability

Before applying, compare the total cost, fees, interest, repayment dates, and consequences of missed payments. Do not borrow solely to improve a score. A lender may consider income, employment, existing obligations, and its own eligibility rules in addition to credit bureau information.

Use one suitable product carefully

If you choose a credit card or loan, understand the terms and keep the amount manageable. For a card, spend only what you can repay and pay the amount due by the due date. For a loan, set a reminder for each instalment and keep enough money available in the repayment account.

Build steady repayment habits

  • Set calendar or bank reminders before due dates.
  • Keep a monthly budget that includes every EMI and card payment.
  • Contact the lender early if you expect difficulty making a payment.
  • Review statements and credit reports for errors.
  • Avoid repeated applications that you do not need.

On-time payments and responsible use are generally positive signals, but no fixed timeline or action guarantees a particular score. Credit information may take time to be reported and reflected in a bureau record.

Be careful with guarantees

Be cautious of anyone promising to create a high score quickly, erase accurate negative information, or guarantee a loan. Accurate information should not be represented as removable simply because it is inconvenient. If your report contains an error, use the official dispute process with the bureau and lender.

Check your record

Use official credit bureau channels to obtain and review your report. RBI directions provide for a free full credit report, including score, from each credit information company once per calendar year. Confirm that identification details and accounts are yours, and follow up on unfamiliar entries.

FinSmarter note: This is general educational information. Choose credit based on your finances and the lender’s current terms, not on a promised score outcome.
