Student Credit Cards: A Careful Starting Guide

Students considering a first card should compare eligibility, total charges and repayment support. A secured or add-on card may be available from some issuers, subject to their terms.

Understand who is responsible

Check whether the account is in your name or linked to another person’s account, who receives the bill and who is liable for repayment. Do not assume an add-on card builds an independent credit history.

Start with a manageable limit

Plan spending around money already available for repayment. Set due-date reminders and understand how interest can apply when the full amount is not paid.

Avoid unsafe offers

Use issuer channels and read the application consent carefully. Never pay an unofficial agent or disclose OTPs, PINs or CVV details.

Keep the decision grounded: compare only terms you can confirm in the issuer’s current product page, fee schedule and cardholder terms. FinSmarter does not issue cards or guarantee approval.
For cardholder rights and official regulatory guidance, see the Reserve Bank of India credit-card FAQs and the RBI Master Direction on Credit Cards. Always verify the issuer’s latest terms.
