Rewards Credit Cards: Measure Usable Value

Rewards are valuable only when you can earn and redeem them on terms that fit your normal spending. Compare practical value, not just points advertised.

Understand how rewards accrue

Check eligible transaction categories, earning rates, monthly or annual caps, excluded merchants and minimum redemption thresholds. Fees and reversals can affect earned rewards.

Estimate redemption value

Compare the value available through realistic redemption options, including any conversion ratio, expiry date, partner restrictions or redemption fee. Avoid spending extra solely to earn rewards.

Keep repayment first

Rewards do not offset interest reliably. If a balance is carried, finance charges can exceed the value of rewards. Plan to repay on time and compare the card’s borrowing costs.

Keep the decision grounded: compare only terms you can confirm in the issuer’s current product page, fee schedule and cardholder terms. FinSmarter does not issue cards or guarantee approval.
For cardholder rights and official regulatory guidance, see the Reserve Bank of India credit-card FAQs and the RBI Master Direction on Credit Cards. Always verify the issuer’s latest terms.
